So we have members of the Dark Side coming to AstroLight and we are spending quite a bit of time talking about preserving our dark skies and why that is so important. From a cultural point of view with Dr Duane Humacher, from an astronomy point of view with Judith Bailey, an Urban planning viewpoint with Dr Margaret Grose AND from a health point of view with Dr Theresa Jones. And if that isn’t enough, The City Dark is showing all night in the Test Lab area.
So we are very excited to have Dr Jones from the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne, not only be on our Dark Skies Panel, but give a talk in the Energy Lab on the Lower Ground Floor as well. Theresa is an expert in the change in behaviours of animals when it comes to artificial lighting at night and heads the Jone’s lab. Her research into lighting the night and it’s affects on animals can also be translated to humans and the results are very interesting to say the least.
The darker side of lighting the night: the effect of night lighting on behaviour, physiology and sleep.
Come along to Theresa’s talk as she unpacks the medical and behavioural consequences of light pollution and what we can do about it. Does it affect our sleep? Why is blue light bad for us? Are LEDs the answer? What does this have to do with penguins and crickets?? (Probably no Star Wars characters at this talk, but you never know…)
