Dr Tanya Hill has a pretty cool job. She is the Senior Curator (Astronomy) of the Melbourne Planetarium, which means she gets to make the awesome Planetarium shows currently featured in the dome. She also talks to the public about the latest in astronomy, including her lecture series, Discover the Night Sky, on now. In the next post we will talk about her latest show, so stay tuned!
I will explain how almost everything we know about astronomy is due to light – waiting for light to travel across the universe to telescopes and then the different ways we investigate the light to learn more.
Dr Tanya first fell in love with Astronomy when her science teacher started an astronomy club and every Friday night they would take the school telescope out and look at the stars, planets and anything else they could find. She studied her PhD at the University of Sydney hunting for supermassive black holes, those elusive objects that do not emit light and make it very hard to see.
Since working at the Melbourne Planetarium, she has produced over a dozen planetarium shows with well known Australian actors such as Sigrid Thorton and Geoffrey Rush doing the narration and showing in over sixteen countries. Her research provides an excellent background and accurate science to these movies which engage audiences of all ages.
