CAASTRO, the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics, is the major sponsor once again for this year’s Astronomy and Light festival, AstroLight. As well as doing cutting edge research in many areas of Astronomy, CAASTRO have been supporting astronomy outreach for many years with their CAASTRO in the Classroom program where they have astrophysicists talk to high schools students across Australia via videoconferencing on anything astronomical. The other fantastic outreach program CAASTRO (and I) have been involved in is the CAASTRO at Uluru Astronomer in Residence and Astronomy Weekend. This program involves a CAASTRO Astronomer visiting the Uluru resort for two weeks to participate in the nightly public observing sessions, give science talks and talk to passers-by in the town square. During August every year, the resort in partnership with CAASTRO put on a weekend of endless astronomy, with some of Australia’s leading astrophysicists giving talks, demonstrations and sitting on panels.
CAASTRO have also teamed up with the Melbourne Planetarium to produce a show that showcases the research being done on Australian telescopes. Narrated by Geoffrey Rush to an orchestral score, Capturing the Cosmos, is a stunningly presented visual feast of the depths of the nights sky all the way to the beginning of the Universe. The show is currently screening at Scienceworks and across Australia and will be the featured show during AstroLight. You will need to get in fast to secure your Planetarium tickets – but don’t worry we will remind you to do that again soon.
At AstroLight, CAASTRO scientists will be giving talks, talking about their research and astronomy with you all and demonstrating the MWA, but more about that soon too. For now we want to thank CAASTRO for their continued support of Astronomy and astronomy education and outreach and in particular their contribution to AstroLight2016!
