So why combine Astronomy and Light and have a festival?
Well, for starters, Astronomers use light in all it’s forms to see things in the Universe and to study how the Universe came to be what we see today. They use it to look back in time and predict the future. Without light we only have a limited knowledge of what is around use and this is posing some of the biggest questions of today – what is Dark Matter and Dark Energy.
But light is used for so much more than Astronomy. Light is used in all the sciences, in engineering and technology. Looking at the smallest objects to the biggest ones, light is the most powerful scientific tool we know.
Light is the combination of electricity and magnetism first discovered by James Clerk Maxwell. Light is not just the rainbow, but encompasses radio waves, microwaves, infra-red, ultra-violet, x-rays and the high energy gamma rays. Every one of these forms of light tells us much about the Universe and everything in it.
But we are also learning how to manipulate light and take advantage of it’s properties so we can see smaller things and objects further away. So we can get light to carry vast amounts of information in new and surprising ways.
So this festival is not just a celebration of Astronomy, but the amazing things we can do with light in all of science as well and we are really excited to be able to this with you!
